Embracing Diversity: Meeting Each Other Sonomama (as-it-is-ness)

Writer: Keiko OzekiKeiko Ozeki

Human diversity, respecting individuals, and accepting one another inevitably lead to social complexity. This is not an easy path. Diversity is not static but fluid—it is constantly evolving, bringing forth new flavors, new colors, and a vibrant liveliness. That is the beauty of diversity. Throughout history, we have made efforts to honor each person and patiently work through the challenges that arise.

Yet in recent years, humanity seems to have grown weary of this effort. The struggle to be present for differences, to listen, and to find common ground can feel exhausting. With less tolerance for discomfort, we see a growing shift toward the notion that it is easier to ignore or exclude the few rather than continue navigating the challenges of diversity.

But true harmony does not come from avoidance or exclusion—it begins with meeting each other sonomama, just as we are. We are all in the same boat. Your peace is my peace, and my peace is your—Viśva-Vāsa, a mutual and interconnected existence. When we allow ourselves to meet people where they are, without the urge to change, fix, or judge, we create the conditions for genuine connection. Sonomama is an invitation to embrace differences without resistance, to sit with discomfort without turning away, and to cultivate the patience needed to truly understand one another.

This practice is not about agreement or compromise—it is about presence. It asks us to stay open, even when faced with perspectives we do not share. It reminds us that every person carries a unique experience we may never fully grasp. By letting go of the impulse to categorize or exclude, we can meet people as they are, where they are, fostering deeper understanding.

I hope we can continue expanding our capacity to be present for one another as we are, not just in moments of ease but especially when discomfort arises. If we can embrace sonomama in our interactions, we open the door to a world where differences are not obstacles but opportunities—to listen, to learn, and to grow together.
