The Art of Adapting – A Realization Through SONOMAMA Meditation

Writer: Keiko OzekiKeiko Ozeki

Have you ever found yourself resisting change, only to realize later that it was inevitable? I used to feel this way, too. But through SONOMAMA meditation, I’ve come to appreciate adaptation not as a struggle, but as a way of being. More than ever before, I am experiencing the profound importance of adapting—not just as a survival mechanism, but as a path to inner freedom.

For all living beings, adaptation is essential. There is no other way to continue living. Every creature, down to each individual cell within us, is constantly adjusting to its surroundings in order to sustain life. I had always understood this intellectually—adaptation was something I knew all organisms must do. But through meditation, this understanding deepened. It shifted from being just a concept to something I could feel in my own experience, guiding the way I navigate life.

When faced with daily changes or unexpected events, I used to resist, feeling as if adaptation meant giving up or losing control. It didn’t always feel appealing. But over time, I have learned to soften, to accept what arises, and to surrender to each moment as it unfolds. This ability has slowly taken root within me. I now realize that adapting does not mean simply being carried away by circumstances. Rather, it means standing firmly in the present moment, anchoring myself while remaining flexible—without being caught up in judgments of good or bad, but simply embracing things as they are.

This understanding has grown through meditation, allowing me to remain centered even in challenging situations. More and more, I feel a quiet sense of joy in this awareness. Ultimately, adaptation is not about control, nor is it about passive surrender. It is about being fully present—rooted yet flexible, open yet grounded. And in this presence, there is freedom.

How do you experience adaptation in your life? Do you find yourself resisting change, or have you discovered ways to flow with it? Let’s continue this practice together. 🙏🏼
